DUST (2008, DVD, 13,27′)

The work “DUST” is based on the opposition of atom-pixel versus idea-picture. This opposition results the aesthetics associated to the structural film, portraying creation of the picture through the destruction of the film matter. The idea of the project is connected with the idea of a private cinema depicted in then film “From My Window” by Józef Robakowski. The portraiting part of the project, which makes up the canvas of this spectacle of creation-destruction of artistic works, is the scene recorded from the roof of Unihotel, where the workers from villages arround Lodz spent the night. The Bałucki Market is a heart of this “bad”, dirty part of city. The recorded situation depicts a fire in a barn nearby the market, which gradually covers the market with white smoke. The scene of putting out the fire is an opportunity to portrait the occupantsfrom the other side. By the use of modernist aesthetics, pixelisation and inserting the stills from Lodz’s Manhattan and different Manhattans from around the world, the breakdown of the old order occurs. The old order was based on the opposition between the good the and old, bad side of the city, connected with Lodz’s Ghetto. The modernist idea which makes up the foundation of architecture deteriorates at last, it yields to the dust, decay, and dissolving in time. The atom and pixel defeat the idea and the picture.
