Birkenau – The Affective Birchband
I was making my new installation for the Living Dead exhibition in Galeria EL in Elblag and one of the projects was the extended version of my Plant Action realisation. Choir of ten birches. I was walking around and thinking of the reason why the trees are not singing as they should. And then I had strong illumination that I am walking around them like SS man around the prisoners that had played Mozart or Beethoven during the executions in the concentration camp. I thought about the name of that band of unnamed musicians as a title of that installation and I could not find the name. And afer the night in the morning I was talking with gallery crew and then Beata who is making the promotional job for the gallery said “why you will not call it Birkenau?”. So this is the story behind. Birkenau as small place with Birches. My second name is also connected with the Birch in Polish. Birch band will play for us so who will we be… the bioethics questions are the anchor that will always lead you to the deep structures of my art. For sure.
